Chapter 5 The Order of the Phoenix
Sirius informed Harry that the shouting woman in the portrait was his own dead mother, as the home was his family's. (Number 12 Grimmauld Place). Although Harry was surprised towards his godfather's hard and bitter voice, they headed downstairs to meet the other members in the house. While Harry greets Mr. Weasly (Ron's Dad) and Mundungus (Another member of the order of the phoenix), the conversation between them accelerates. As Mundungus asks Harry whether if he met Mrs. Figg when Harry replies "I haven't seen anyone.""it's been very lousy." For the first time, Sirius grinned as he jokes that "Don't know what you're complaining about.""I've been stuck inside for a month." Sirius continues as he says that he's been stuck in because the ministry of magic was after him including Voldemort as well. In addition, his disguise as an animagus (A spell to transform into an animal) was now found by Voldermort and his gang, it was almost impossible for him to go outside safely. In spite of this, after arriving at the house from his previous hiding spot, he has been trying to clean the house as it was the only job he could do. By cleaning, it refers to making the whole house a little bit suitable for human habitation; the house still included shouting portraits and several more magical creatures that seemed to have had inhabited inside the house while Sirius and his Family have left it for ten years untouched since his mother died.
In the middle of the conversation, Fred and Geroge appeared suddenly in the room, as their mother Mrs. Weasly shouted, "JUST BECAUSE YOUR'E ALLOWED TO USE MAGIC NOW, YOU DON'T HAVE TO WHIP YOUR'E WANDS FOR EVERYTHING!." Apparently, Fred and Geroge had apparated (A spell that allows you to teleport) themselves into the room. Harry and Sirius laughed as they watched the scene, while Mrs. Weasly kept on with her sermon. "Bill (Their older brother) didn't feel the need to apparate every few feet! Charlie (Their older brother) didn't charm everything he met! Percy-" and stopped dead. Percy had been one of the brothers as well; however, after the fourth book where Harry revealed that Voldemort was back, as well as Dumbledore, he left the family as well as Hogwarts to join the ministry of magic. The ministry of magic, including numerous wizards, did not believe that Voldemort was back. In addition. the ministry has been accusing Harry and Dumbledore as nutters. The Weasly's were the minorities who trusted them, including the member of the order of the phoenix. However, Percy who started working as a ministry assistant decided to stay loyal to the ministry and throw his family. After a few moments of silence, Mrs, Weasly shifted her conversation to cleaning the house.
As the conversation continued for a while, Mrs. Weasly finally suggested the children go to bed, as Sirius interrupted. "Not just yet, Molly." as he turned to Harry. "You know, I'm surprised at you. I thought the first thing you'd do when you got here would be to start asking questions about Voldemort." As the atmosphere changed rather tensed, Harry replied "I did!""I asked Ron and Hermione but they said we're not allowed in the Order so-" as Mrs. Weasly interrupted "And their quite right,""You're too young." The conversation proceeded almost immediately into a small fight. The children and Sirius insisted that they should tell, while Molly(Mrs, Weasly) kept on saying that they were too young. However, as Lupin calmed them down to explain "I think Harry gets the facts- not all the facts, but the general picture..." all of them seemed to agree with the idea.
Harry started asking questions. "Where is Voldemort?""There haven't been any funny deaths yet." Sirius answered politely. In addition, told him that this was because there haven't yet been funny deaths. As Harry asked why had Voldemort suddenly stopped murdering people when he never seemed to care 14 years ago, Lupin explained that perhaps it was because he did not prefer to draw attention. Though the whole conversation the members explained that they reckon Voldemort's building up his army including dark creatures and death eaters, as well as several wizards and witches he bewitched to follow him, and how Voldermort is extremely fearful of Dumbledore. In addition, how the ministry and Fudge (The minister) prefer not to accept the fact, or could not bring themselves to believe it as it is much more comfortable for them to think that Dumbledore and Harry are lying. In addition, they were relying on the Daily Prophet, a world-wide wizard newspaper to accuse Harry and Dumbledore in order to prevail the whole wizard society to disbelieve them. In addition, the order of the phoenix, who has been the opposite side of the Voldemort army, an army that supports Dumbledore and Harry's side, has been trying to bring people on their side but have been struggling. As the talk continued further until it reached a story about a particular weapon Voldemort was searching for, Harry interrupted. "What kind of weapon?""Something worse than Avada Kedavra?(The killing curse)" Once again, Molly insisted "That's enough!" Harry asserted that he wanted to join the Order and fight as well. However, Lupin explained that the order was for overage wizards. Even Sirius shrugged but did not rebellion.
I thought it was a chapter where Sirius, as Harry's godfather showed his appearance a lot. In the author's biography, I learned that J.K Rowling did not have such a great relationship with his father. In addition, it also explained that all the manly characters on Harry's side came from her hopes of having a better relationship with her father. In spite of this, I felt the importance of Sirius, existing in the whole plot as well as existing as Harry's godfather. Other this, I was also surprised by the sudden change of the ministry, as in the previous book, they used to be fully on Harry's side. I felt the whole plot was becoming more and more uneasy and miserable as Harry's enemy like characters increase.
However, it really increases the reality of the story, by including these ministry affairs and newspaper bias. In my opinion, it was more of an informative chapter for the readers as well as Harry to understand the current situation, although I enjoyed it.
